You may also find helpful information in the ADTA Dealer Trainiging and Compliance Manual. It will be available on September 14, 2009 at dealertraining.org. The Dealer Training and Compliance Manual not only contains start up instructions, but profit advice and Federal compliance issues.
Welcome to the World's Greatest Business.
This is a good blog, more people should be exposed to it so new dealers can share tips on what obstacles they had to overcome. In my opinion, getting the license is the easy part, once you read your state requirements that you can get at your local Dmv. Zoning is the real issue. It seems here in new york that the franchise have a lock on things, and Im extremely frustrated. Any advice?

I talk to dealers all over the US on a regular basis and the highest profits always come from used vehicle sales. With New York being one of the larger states in the country there are many opportunities for someone to make money in the used motor vehicle market. Ask some dealers in your area what type of niche they are in to see if that niche is profitable. Some of the rural areas may have a need for farm equipment. Smaller town dealerships always do very well. The possibilities are endless in New York.
